Gillingham chairman Paul Scally has appealed to the club’s supporters to object development plans for the Chatham Docks site.
The League Two outfit have been trying to find a home for a new stadium in Medway for the past 10 years and are currently working on a site at nearby Mill Hill.
However, the latest application from landowners Peel Holdings for the southern area of their Docks site contains similar facilities to those which the club will need in order to build a new multi-purpose stadium at Mill Hill and, should the scheme be approved, it would make the club’s plans no longer viable.
And Scally has warned approval of the Docks proposal, which is due to be voted on by local councillors over the coming weeks, would force the Gills to start looking outside of the Medway Towns for a new home.
In his programme notes for Saturday’s game with Macclesfield, Scally said:
“I urge you all, if you wish your local football club to remain as part of the community in Medway, to lobby your local councillor and/or the planning department at Medway Council to ensure the Peel planning application is rejected in its current form, at least until councillors are able to fully consider the alternative proposals that will be submitted on Mill Hill.
“This not about me or you: it is about our children and our children’s children, and I cannot overemphasise the importance of this crucial decision.”
